The AI Video Shortlist Compare tools

What is the cheapest AI video generator?

Updated: · 6 min read

The short answer

Of the plans we compare, on prices checked on 29 September 2026, the cheapest is Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, which buys 10 eight-second Veo 3.1 Fast clips with sound ($0.50 each). The lowest cost per clip on an entry plan is Midjourney Basic ($10, 100 five-second clips, $0.10 each), but those are silent 480p. For 720p, Kling Standard ($8.80) works out at $0.40 a clip. Free: Google Flow gives 50 credits a day, enough for two Veo 3.1 Fast clips. Expect to pay two or three times these figures once failed attempts are counted.

Cheapest entry plans, per clip

"Cheapest" only makes sense per clip, because a $10 plan can buy 100 clips or 8. This table divides each entry plan's monthly price by the number of clips its credits buy on a named model, using each vendor's published credit rate.

PlanPrice a monthModel and clipClips a monthPer clip
Midjourney Basic$10Midjourney Video, 5 s, 480p, no sound100$0.10

Adobe Firefly Standard$9.99Firefly Video, 5 s, 720p8$1.25
Runway Standard$15Gen-4.5, 5 s10$1.50

Monthly billing, regular prices, checked 29 September 2026. Flow, Kling and Luma rates re-checked on 5 October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm on the vendor's page before paying. Each tool has its own page in the full price comparison.

Clip length matters too. A Flow clip is 8 seconds with sound; the Kling and Midjourney rows are 5 seconds without it. Per second of footage, Flow at $0.50 for 8 seconds is closer to Kling than the per-clip figure suggests.

Count the clips you throw away

Most generations aren't usable on the first try: hands melt, a face drifts, the camera does something you didn't ask for. You pay for every attempt.

The Shortlist's default assumption is three attempts per usable clip. That's a planning assumption you can change, not a measured failure rate, and your own rate depends on the model and how hard the shot is.

PlanPer clip, every attempt usablePer usable clip at 3 attempts
Midjourney Basic$0.10$0.30
Luma Plus$0.30$0.91
Kling Standard$0.40$1.26
Google AI Plus$0.50$1.66
Hailuo Standard$0.66$2.10
Adobe Firefly Standard$1.25$5.00
Runway Standard$1.50$5.00

A cheap plan with a model that needs five tries per keeper can cost more than a dearer plan that gets it right in two. Test the hardest shot in your project before you subscribe.

Why the headline "up to X videos" is often wrong

The vendor's own headline count is rarely the clip you want to make:

Free options

OptionWhat you getLimits
Google Flow50 credits a day, with or without a subscription: 2 Veo 3.1 Fast clips or 5 Veo 3.1 Lite clipsUnused credits expire daily. Without a subscription you may not be able to generate video at peak hours, roughly 2 PM to 5 PM UTC. Must be 18+ and in a supported country
ViggleUp to 5 videos a dayWatermarked on the free plan, as of 29 September 2026

All Flow output carries Google's invisible SynthID watermark. A visible watermark is a setting you can switch, except that Google applies it automatically for users in India, South Korea and Vietnam.

Cheapest at higher volume

Bigger plans usually lower the price per clip:

PlanPrice a monthClips a monthPer clip
Midjourney Standard (480p)$30450$0.07
Google AI Ultra $100 (Veo 3.1 Fast)$1001,000$0.10
Luma Pro (720p)$90400$0.23
Kling Pro (720p)$32.56100$0.33
Hailuo Pro (2K)$3875$0.51

Google AI Ultra subscribers pay 10 credits for a Veo 3.1 Fast clip instead of 20, which is why the $100 plan is so much cheaper per clip than AI Plus. On Midjourney, Pro and Mega also include unlimited SD video in the slower Relax mode.

Annual billing

Paying yearly cuts the monthly price on most tools. Kling Standard drops from $8.80 to $6.60 a month, bringing a 720p clip to $0.30, and Midjourney Basic from $10 to $8. Google publishes no discounted annual price for its AI plans. Only commit to a year once a month's use has shown the model suits your work.

How to find the cheapest plan for you

  1. Decide the clip you actually need: length, resolution, sound, and whether it starts from text or an image.
  2. Price that exact clip on the model's credit table, not the plan headline.
  3. Divide the plan's monthly credits by that rate to get clips a month, then the price by clips.
  4. Divide again by your attempts per keeper. Three is a sensible starting guess.
  5. Use the free allowance first. Two free Flow clips a day is enough to find out whether Veo suits your project before paying anyone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest AI video generator subscription?

Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is the lowest monthly price among the plans compared, with 200 Flow credits on top of the free daily 50. Midjourney Basic at $10 buys more clips, but they're short, silent and 480p.

Is there a free AI video generator without a watermark?

Google Flow gives everyone 50 free credits a day. Its visible watermark is a setting you control, except in India, South Korea and Vietnam where it's applied automatically, and every clip carries Google's invisible SynthID watermark. Viggle's free videos are watermarked.

What's the cheapest AI video generator app?

Of the apps compared here, Kling Standard ($8.80 a month, about 22 five-second 720p clips) and Google AI Plus ($4.99, 10 eight-second clips with sound) are the cheapest ways into a current, named video model.

Why do people on Reddit say AI video is expensive?

Mostly because of retries. A plan that buys 22 clips may give you seven you keep, and high resolution, sound and longer clips each multiply the credit cost.

Is Midjourney really the cheapest per clip?

Per clip on an entry plan, yes, at $0.10. But Midjourney animates an image into a 5-second, 480p clip without sound. HD costs 7 GPU minutes per clip instead of 2 and needs the Standard plan or above.
